This means if you want to cancel into a special, the normal you are cancelling from has to have been linked from the previous button. Its also worth noting that most bnb's in sf4 start with chain cancellable light attacks, these are mash friendly but you cant straight cancel out of a chained attack (except for rapid button specials like chun lightning legs and gen rapid hands). If you are struggling to link attacks from the start try omega mode characters as they have the sf5 3 frame buffer system on their links, so you can mash the next button and it will hit if the frame data says so. In general most bnbs go from lights to mediums into special, or just lights linked into heavies that cancel into specials. Sf4 has the same links system but it doesnt contain the braindead easymode 3 frame combo buffer, this means a 1 frame link is actually a 1 frame link and you cant just mash the next button to get the combo. Sf5 is also a links based fighter, however, sf5 contains an inbuild 3 frame buffer on all links, this means you can just mash the next button and as long as the frame data says so, it will combo. Sf4 is primarily a links based fighter with a few exceptions (guy has target combos and also dudley however not reliant on them).
